Breast augmentation is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the world and can give women with small or unevenly-sized breasts a fuller, firmer and better-proportioned appearance.
Women may also elect to undergo breast augmentation for other medical and aesthetic reasons, including balancing breast size and compensating for reduced breast mass after breastfeeding, massive weight loss or surgery. Breast augmentations may need to be combined with others such as a breast lift or fat transfer to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing result.
At Illuminate Plastic Surgery, breast augmentations are performed using FDA approved implants that are either entirely silicone or a silicone shell filled with saline (salt water). Various incisions can be made to minimize scar visibility such as in the armpit, in the crease on the underside of the breast, or the border of the dark skin around the nipple. A pocket is then created to accommodate the implant, which can be placed underneath the breast tissue or the chest wall muscle. Typically, a breast augmentation lasts one to two hours and is performed under general anesthesia in our on-site surgery center. Recovery time is typically 2-6 weeks.
