Liposuction is a procedure that involves the use of a suction machine to surgically remove excess fat from unwanted areas on the body. The best candidates for liposuction are men and women who have persistent bulges of fat that have not responded favorably to diet and exercise.
Liposuction can be done on almost any area of the body: thighs, hips, buttocks, lower legs, back, abdomen, chest, upper arms, neck, jaw line and cheeks. The result of the process is a slimmer, shapelier, more contoured body.
During liposuction, small incisions are made in inconspicuous areas near or along natural creases of the body. Then, a fluid that contains local anesthesia and epinephrine is injected into the incisions to expand the tissues, numb the area and minimize bleeding during the surgery.
Shortly after, a small device called a cannula is inserted and a forward and backward motion is used to create small tunnels within the fat. This is then suctioned out of the body. Over the course of several weeks, the underlying space will collapse and overlying skin will tighten, resulting in a more contoured appearance of the treated area.
Dr. Boudreault performs liposuction in our onsite surgical facility under general anesthesia. Total recovery time is typically 4-6 weeks.
