Stretch marks are a form of scarring on the skin. During rapid periods of growth such as pregnancy or with weight gain, the skin’s dermis is torn while leaving the skin above intact. This creates a wide depressed scar otherwise referred to as a stretch mark.
Today, a number of lotions and creams exist that tout the ability to heal stretch marks; however, the most effective way to alleviate them is by healing them from the inside, out. This is done by stimulating collagen growth in the dermis.
The Cynosure 1540 laser penetrates deep down into the dermis to promote collagen growth without damaging the top layer of the skin. During the treatment, the laser delivers light to the skin through an array of high precision microbeams. This creates narrow and deep columns of skin coagulation surrounded by healthy, untreated skin. Over time, the skin will begin to repair itself by replacing damaged skin with younger and healthier skin. Over a period of weeks to months, contours are smoothed, and visible signs of stretch marks are improved.
In addition to stretch marks, this non-ablative laser can treat a variety of conditions, including:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Acne scars
- Surgical scars
- Brown spots
- Uneven skin tone and texture
Fractional laser treatments with the 1540 are much less invasive compared to ablative laser procedures. Patients will experience slight redness and swelling for a few days following treatment. Since the treatments are more gentle and require less downtime, patients will typically require several sessions to achieve ideal results. Our office generally recommends at least four sessions performed two to four weeks apart.
