One of the most common questions during plastic surgery consultations is, “Where will my scars be and how will they look?” In some cases, the anticipated appearance of scars impacts which procedures patients have performed. Scarring is much less of a concern now thanks to the Cynosure 1540 laser. The Cynosure 1540 is FDA cleared for the treatment scars.
This laser uses fractional resurfacing technology to penetrate deeply without damaging the top layer of the skin. During the treatment, the laser delivers light to the skin through an array of high precision microbeams. This creates narrow and deep columns of skin coagulation surrounded by healthy, untreated skin. Over time, the skin will begin to repair itself by replacing damaged skin with younger and healthier skin. Over a period of weeks to months, contours are smoothed and visible signs of scarring are improved.
In addition to surgical scarring, this non-ablative laser can treat a variety of conditions, including:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Acne scars
- Brown spots
- Uneven skin tone and texture
Fractional laser treatments with the 1540 are much less invasive compared to ablative laser procedures. Patients will experience slight redness and swelling for a few days following treatment. Since the treatments are more gentle and require less downtime, patients will typically require several sessions to achieve ideal results. Our office generally recommends at least four sessions performed two to four weeks apart.
