With age, vascular lesions may become more visible through the skin. They are harmless but can look unsightly with a red or purple hue. The most common types of vascular lesions are spider veins, telangiectasia, port wine stains and hemangiomas. They can occur on almost any part of the body, but are especially common on the face or legs.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is one of the most effective treatments for treating vascular lesions on the face.* During IPL, light penetrates the epidermis and targets capillaries in the dermis. The light is selectively absorbed by contents within the blood vessels and damages them. With time, the body naturally processes these damaged cells resulting in clearer, more youthful skin.*
Each IPL treatment can be performed in as little as a few minutes depending on the size of the treatment area. Discomfort is typically minimal. Following an IPL treatment, most patients will resume activities immediately. However, one should expect some redness and swelling in the first few days following treatment. Small vascular lesions can often be removed with a single treatment, while other lesions may take several sessions to achieve optimal results.*
At Illuminate Plastic Surgery, we utilize world class Cynosure IPL equipment.
