Traditional CO2 lasers function by removing the full epidermis of the skin. Over time, new firmer and smoother skin replaces the old. The SmartSkin+ differs from traditional CO2 lasers by employing a series of fractional laser beams that are directed into the skin. While these beams of light affect the treated skin, the surrounding skin remains unaffected. In addition, the laser stimulates the production of new collagen deep within the skin, giving you a more youthful-looking appearance.
The best part about Palo Alto or San Jose SmartSkin+ C02 laser resurfacing is that the treatment is completely customizable. Patients can achieve exceptional results clearing fine lines, deep creases and uneven skin tone in one or multiple treatments depending on the downtime they desire. SmartSkin+ is performed in our office by one of our laser nurses or in the operating room by our surgeons if a surgical grade laser is desired. In preparation for the treatment, the face will be numbed with a topical and local anesthetic. With each pulse of the laser, energy beams penetrate the skin and remove old and damaged skin cells. Then, the body naturally builds healthy cells to take the place of cells that were cleared away. SmartSkin+ is quick and will take less than an hour to perform.
Immediately following the treatment, the skin will feel warm and may appear sunburned. Recovery time from your San Jose or Palo Alto SmartSkin+ CO2 treatment will depend entirely on how much treatment you receive. However, whatever options you choose, recovery will be much faster than you would see with a traditional CO2 laser. If you are having only a light treatment, you can expect to recover in as little as a day or two. Moderate treatments may require three or four days for recovery, while deep treatments may require about a week for recovery.
