A labiaplasty is a relatively short and simple procedure in which the doctor surgically reduces the excess tissue of the labia. He then evens out the edges of the labia minora and stitches the incised area with dissolving sutures. Once the procedure is complete, that excess labial tissue will not return, although the remaining tissue could stretch out again if you have another child. Because this surgery is relatively fast, some patients take this opportunity to combine labiaplasty with other procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lift, or liposuction.
You will come to our San Jose or Palo Alto plastic surgery office where our AAAASF surgery center is located so that Dr. Boudreault can perform the procedure. No general anesthetic is required. Dr. B will complete the entire procedure using a local anesthetic and the whole process should be done in about an hour. You may experience some discomfort after the operation, but this discomfort is usually easily handled with standard painkillers or ice packs. Once the procedure is complete, you can go home. The stitches should dissolve within a week or two.
Full recovery from a labiaplasty is about a week, after which the sutures should have dissolved. However, you can shower the day after your labiaplasty, and you should be able to return to work only three or four days after the procedure is complete. It is recommended that you abstain from sexual intercourse for at least six weeks after the procedure has been completed.
