What Is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery, can aesthetically improve the size, shape, angle, or position by reshaping the cartilage of the outer ear, reshaping the tissue of the lobe, correcting asymmetry of both ears, making large ears look smaller, or pinning back protruding, forward-facing ears.

How Is An Otoplasty Performed?

In otoplasty Palo Alto plastic surgeons reshape the cartilage of the ear and secure the ear to the head. This can serve to correct overly large ears (macrotia), fix protruding ears or repair the effects of a prior ear surgery that may not have gone as intended.

What Can I Expect During An Otoplasty Procedure?

At Illuminate Plastic Surgery in San Jose & Palo Alto otoplasty is a fairly quick surgery with a low complication rate that produces lasting results. This procedure is performed at our state-of-the-art AAAASF surgery center under general anesthesia but may be done in-clinic with local anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the case. Dr. Boudreault will make a tiny incision that is hidden in the crease behind the ear, and will then sculpt the cartilage to adjust the shape and position the ear closer to the head before securing it. The entire surgery normally takes less than two hours and is an out-patient procedure, so you will go home the same day.

How Long Will It Take To Recover From Otoplasty?

There is minimal discomfort for both adults and kids post-procedure. The week after the surgery, you will return for a follow-up visit to remove the sutures. A soft headband helps to keep the ears protected and secure, and should be worn for the first two weeks. Also, avoid strenuous activity for two weeks after surgery to help minimize swelling. The ears will feel swollen and tender for approximately 3-4 weeks, and will gradually subside. At 4-6 weeks, all physical activity can return to normal.

What Does An Otoplasty Treat?

A Palo Alto & San Jose Otoplasty can be used to treat a variety of problems related to ear shape and size. Most patients choose Otoplasty to adjust abnormally large ears and noticeably protruding ears, a condition where the ears fold over and tilt forward. This procedure is not intended to correct poor hearing but is primarily to enhance the face and, thus, boost social confidence. There are no age restrictions for having this procedure, but it is generally recommended to wait until at least the age of 6 for the ears to finish growing.

How Soon Will I See Results From My Otoplasty?

You will see a noticeable difference in the shape or position of your ears as soon as bandages are removed. After the majority of swelling subsides at 1-2 weeks, your ears will only get better and better. Minor residual swelling can take around 6 weeks to subside. The final results are shown after 2-3 months and will last for a lifetime.

How Much Does An Otoplasty Cost?

The average cost of an Otoplasty in San Jose & Palo Alto can range from $13,000–$14,000, depending on the complexity of the individual case. This estimate includes all fees, such as anesthesia and facility fees. If you wish to have aesthetically repositioned ears as soon as possible, but would like to pay for the procedure over time in small monthly increments, we offer financing through CareCredit and Alphaeon. Or, many of our patients also choose to apply for credit cards with longer terms at 0% interest.
