Hair Restoration Treatments
We all shed hair sometimes, but excessive hair loss can be a big concern for both men and women of all ages. Hair loss can make even the most confident individuals feel insecure about their appearance.
While changing a hairstyle or wearing makeup and hats will offer temporary relief, those who are looking for a long term solution may seek out medical treatment. Some of the most popular medical treatments include medication therapy and hair transplant surgery. More recently, some physicians have adopted a technique that uses patients’ natural growth factors to stimulate hair growth in balding areas.*
Concentrated blood plasma contains approximately three to five times the number of growth factors found in normal circulating blood. This technique has been used in the medical community for over two decades. It is commonly used to promote skin and wound healing, in a number of medical specialties including oral surgery, neurosurgery, sports medicine and orthopedics. Recent studies suggest that growth factors may serve as a safe and effective treatment option for male and female pattern hair loss by stimulating the growth of hair follicles.
Hair restoration treatments are performed in three steps. First, several tubes of blood are collected in a process similar to a routine lab draw. Then, the blood that is drawn is placed in a centrifuge that separates the blood into its components. Lastly, growth factors are extracted from the centrifuged blood and injected into the scalp. Because the plasma is autologous (i.e.- extracted from a patient’s own blood), there is very little risk and no reported significant adverse reaction.
Following treatment, patients can return to their normal activity almost immediately, but their scalp must be protected from the sun and other chemicals or environmental factors that might cause irritation to the area. Typically, treatment is needed every three to four months to achieve ideal results.*
Results from hair restoration will vary from patient to patient, however, preliminary studies on the treatment show great promise.*
