BOTOX ® and DYSPORT ®
Neurotoxin injections such as Botox and Dysport are used to reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. This procedure is the most commonly performed minimally invasive cosmetic treatment in the U.S.
Neurotoxins are frequently used to treat fine lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows, on the forehead and around the eyes. They can also be used “off-label” to soften the jawline, turn up the corners of the mouth, minimize the appearance of a gummy smile and more.
What causes wrinkles?
There are a number of factors that contribute to the formation of facial wrinkles – age, environmental exposure and genetics name a few. The primary cause of wrinkling, however is repetitive muscle contraction. Muscle contraction occurs when nerve cells release a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. When released, acetylcholine binds to nerve cell membranes to transmit a signal to the muscle causing it to contract. Years of repeated muscle contraction can cause deep facial lines in the skin above the muscle.
How do neurotoxins like Botox and Dysport prevent frown lines?
When neurotoxins are injected into the treatment area, acetylcholine cannot bind to the nerve membrane. Without this mechanism, facial muscles have a greatly reduced ability to contract. When the muscles that contribute to wrinkling have impaired movement, the existing wrinkles will soften over time.
Treatment with a neurotoxin is generally safe and effective. Patients who are not considered candidates for the treatment are women who are pregnant or breastfeeding or anyone with an underlying neuromuscular disorder.
If you are interested in treatment with injectable neurotoxin, your first step is to schedule a consultation with our medical staff to determine if you are candidates for treatment and develop a plan. If you wish, the procedure can often be performed at the same time as the initial consultation.
The process of injecting neurotoxins like Botox or Dysport takes less than ten minutes to perform depending on the number and size of the treated areas. Using a fine needle, small amounts of Botox or Dysport will be injected in the muscles. Over a period of several days to weeks, the muscles weaken. Results typically last three to four months.
There is virtually no downtime from neurotoxin injections. Immediately after the treatment, patients may notice slight swelling or needle marks. There is also a small chance of bruising. To minimize the risk of bruising, we recommend that all patients avoid alcohol or blood thinning medications such as Vitamin E or fish oil. .
